In a process spanning 50 million years, Cappadocia existed as a vast inland sea. Due to the eruptions of the surrounding volcanoes and the heat they emitted, this sea dried up, and the cooled lavas took its place. Over time, various natural events such as strong winds and flowing streams shaped these cooled lavas. Thus, the distinctive fairy chimneys emerged, altering the landscape. “imagination valley,” located in the Cappadocia region, is one of the unique places with extraordinary Fairy Chimneys. Hence, various legends can emerge around this phenomenon. The rock formations in the valley have inherited their share of mysteries and legends from Cappadocia. One of the narratives suggests that the Fairy Chimneys in the valley were once humans punished and turned into stone through prayers. The legend persists over the years due to the distinct appearance of each Fairy Chimney, resembling different living beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is said that there is a shrine in this enchanted valley on the hills of Aktepe. Around the shrine, there is said to be a “Dede” (wise elder) who possesses the power to bring forth water by striking his staff on the ground. The wise elder, upon the arrival of a gang referred to as “gavur odusu” (infidel gang), prayed. This gang aimed to kill both the elder and the local people. Therefore, the wise elder raised his hands to the sky, praying for these people to turn into stone. Allah accepted the elder’s prayers, and the enemies were transformed into stone, much like the Fairy Chimneys. The people and their animals were turned into stone, preserving them in the state of petrification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The region around Cappadocia, including Pa\u015faba\u011f\u0131 and Three Holy Christian Rocks, is also associated with legends of petrification similar to those in Devrent valley. The Fairy Chimneys’ structures resembling human figures have led to the perpetuation of such legends over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It captures attention with its churches, monasteries, and settlements, making it one of the oldest inhabited places.
