Belha monastery

Belha Monastery is located near the town of Ozkonak, which is around 1 km from the Avanos district of Nevsehir, Turkey. It is a significant historical monastery that visitors heading to the underground city of Özkonak should explore. Belha Monastery has a unique structure, with its upper part formed by natural rocks and columns.

Belha Monastery dates back to the Roman period and is believed to have been built in the 4th century. This church, belonging to the Byzantines, served as a major center for the religious education of the early Christians who fled from Roman oppression. It is one of the largest churches in the region. The lower part of the church also houses a water source. When examining the church, relief carvings can be observed. There are places to attach swords on the columns, suggesting that warrior priests may have been trained here. It is known as an Orthodox church. Exploring the interior structure of the church, one can find an observation tower, kitchen, and a dungeon in the lower part of the church. Today, this dungeon is also known as a healing room.
