Karabas church is the largest and most remarkable church located in the Soganlı region of Kayseri. The church is known to have been built in the 5th century and reflects the characteristic structure of the Roman period. The walls of the church indicate that it was restored again between the 11th and 8th centuries. Initially adorned with simple and plain motifs, the walls started to feature frescoes using earth pigments in the 11th century. With the discovery of oil painting, the earth pigments were overlaid with oil paint.
The church’s walls contain numerous depictions. We highly recommend visiting the most prominent church in the region, Karabas church.
